Elma Davies encounters dozens of characters along her journey. Here is a brief overview...

• Elma Davies, 19, was born and grew up just outside of Withercombe, the main town on the moors. She is described as having big, blue eyes, long, flowing blonde hair and petite, delicate features. Though her confidence may have been suppressed, Elma is far from spineless and uses bravery and her inner fire to battle whatever life throws at her.

• Samuel 'Sam' Walters, 21, was born and lived in London in the early 1800s until he left to fight as a soldier in Portugal. During the civil war, he gained his immortality via his possessive and abusive maker, Mona, before joining the Modernist faction. Sam is described as having beautiful amber eyes and short, curly brown hair. He has a big heart and is very protective, but he is far from perfect.

• Darius Calpeyna, 24, was born in Lazio, Italy, in 50 BC. He is the second-oldest Calpeyna sibling and runs the Modernist faction. He is described as having tan, olive skin, turquoise-blue eyes, and jet-black hair. His heart is his biggest weakness, and despite his age, he can be immature and selfish. His main focus is on Elma, which causes problems throughout his faction and family.

• Carlos Calpeyna, 27, the eldest Calpeyna sibling and ruler of the Freehunter faction. He is described as looking similar to Darius, except he is older, has slightly longer hair and a faint scar across his face from where his father had attacked him when he was younger. He can be cruel and vicious, though he believes his actions are justified.

• Devena Calpeyna, 22, leader of the Scavenger/Children of Devena faction. Extremely fearful of vampire hunters, and goes above and beyond to protect herself and her faction. She is not trusting, and her fear incites a nasty streak of vindictiveness. She is described as being beautiful with long, jet-black hair, olive skin, and turquoise-blue eyes.

• Serena Calpeyna, 20, the youngest sister, does not lead a faction.

• Daniel Calpeyna, 18, the youngest Calpeyna, runs the Pythagorean faction. Described as having pale, sickly skin, platinum blonde hair and turquoise-blue eyes. He has strong views on the morals of vampirism and chooses to abstain from blood. He has made himself weak and looks to strengthen his position politically, and also by basing himself in his secure castle.

• Ekira Zaya, late twenties, is described as having fiery red hair and piercing, green eyes. She is a Venandi and also part vampire, obsessed with maintaining her power, whatever the sacrifice.

• Alec Leon, 27, is described as being attractive with dark brown hair, green eyes and an abundance of tattoos. He is from Spain and part of the Scavenger faction, and has spent the majority of his life imprisoned in Calpeyna manor for the murder of a Modernist region leader. His most notable feature is his cheeky personality, and he takes great pleasure in winding up the people around him with his unfiltered remarks. 

• Jessica Harris, 18, lives in Blackhaven in the house owned by her grandmother, Molly Harris. She is very confident and takes great pleasure in being the popular girl at school. She is described as having long, silky brown hair and piercing green eyes. Her personality is borderline psychotic as she mercilessly tortures Elma with the Wells twins.

• Katie and Georgia Wells, 18, twins who live with Jessica in Blackhaven. Described as sharing Jessica's features, silky brown hair, piercing green eyes, so much so that she could be their long-lost triplet. Also going out of their way to torture Elma, she refers to them as spineless cling-ons, as they have no justification for their actions other than gang mentality. 

• Dr Valetin Lutz, a German doctor in his forties, described as having wild grey hair, manic eyes, and usually wearing a white lab coat. He lives at Calpeyna manor and has assisted the Modernist faction for almost half a millennium. He is incredibly smart - his notable inventions include the sun-resistance cream - and while loyal to his faction, he does sometimes stray to his own secret side quests.

• Anthony Caroso, 30, bodyguard to Darius, along with his younger brother Damien. Of Italian descent with dark brown eyes, slicked back brown hair and very tall with broad shoulders. Damien says that he prefers to offer his mind to the faction, whereas Anthony uses his brawn. He is not trusting of Elma and has a nasty streak that she is often privy to, but he does have a softer, emotional side.

• Mona, mid-twenties, described as having bouncy, shoulder-length blonde hair and beautiful blue eyes. She is an American living in Spain as part of the Scavenger faction. She is a close advisor of Devena and often feeds into her fears for her own gain. She is abusive, manipulative and still desperately longing for Sam due to being his maker.
